DESIGN STATEMENT
Current mental healthcare focus on stabilizing the instability symptoms of the patients in acute care setting due to the development in medication therapy and is usually discharged within days into the larger. However, the patients have limited access to resources and support network and often this is the state where social issues and homelessness might occur as intermediate care is lacking to help the transition of the patient from institutionalized isolation to independent community living and employment, showing the lack of continuum care in the recovery model and the emphasis of medical and social rehabilitation is left to the patient. Patient will only achieve temporary recoveries when segregated from the community because their anxieties and fears reactivated when they are placed back into their regular environment.
The halfway home for recovering mental ill patients is proposed to bridge the gap in the recovery model to help recovering patients regain skills and independence in their post treatment recovery by reintegrating rather than isolating patients from the community with the concept of therapeutic community in mind. The center is a hybrid of a rehabilitation, day care center, mental health assessment, vocational training, and horticulture therapy spaces, integrating with community amenities. The idea is to encourage community participation to support the vulnerable group by using the amenities, while creating awareness in the neighborhood at the same time creating revenue and provide opportunity for patient to live in a real live simulation haven. Patient can decide the degree of interaction with public as they wish as they progress in recovery.
The design intention is to create an urban rehabilitation which imitates the feeling of a village and the L.O.H.A.S(Lifestyle of health and sustainability) ambience, to build a safe and supportive environment for the patients to help them to regain living and vocational skills. The building form is synthesized from residential pitch roof to create a domesticated outlook and homely ambience while providing roof garden at the same time.
